Texas ProKart Challenge LogoGCKI is thrilled to announce that they will be host to the Texas Pro-Kart Challenge sanctioned by Superkarts! USA.  For 2012, the series will include three double-race weekends in Katy, Houston and Denton.  The TPKC will include all the benefits of the SKUSA regional program and is also an official Rotax Max Challenge series, providing racers with the punches necessary to qualify for the U.S. Rotax Grand Nationals.  GCKI will manage the races at both the Katy and Grandsport tracks, ensuring racers the highest quality racing experience they have come to expect at our events.  NTK will manage their race with equal dedication to racer experience.

Dates for the 6-Race Regional Series:
May 5-6: Gulf Coast Karters - Katy, TX
June 2-3: Grandsport Speedway - Houston, TX
June 30-July 1:   North Texas Karters - Denton, TX

More details and the full announcement can be found here: http://www.ekartingnews.com/news_info.php?n=19853
Information on the series is also availbale on the official SKUSA! USA website www.superkartsusa.com

A note to GCKI members: For logistical reasons we have scheduled the TPKC on three of GCKI’s former club-racing weekends.  We fully intend to enable our club members to enjoy our approved 8 + 8 spring / fall racing program.  Watch this page for an announcement in the very near future of the revised dates for those races affected by this exciting development.  GCKI spring series races 1 through 6 will not be affected by this change and we will give our members plenty of time to plan their racing and personal schedules for the remainder of the year.

GCKI Revs Up the 2012 Season with our Opening Race on Saturday February 4th PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Sunday, January 29 2012 00:00

The 2012 all-member meeting had excellent attendance, and was well-represented by longtime as well as new members covering a wide cross-section of karting interests.  A full newsletter detailing all of the important decisions will follow shortly. However, publishing the 2012 season is foremost of importance.

The 2012 Spring Season gets into gear with a Saturday race on February 4th (thus avoiding any conflict with this year's Superbowl.)  We will resume our customary Sunday schedule beginning with race 2 and continue throughout the rest of the season.  Both our Spring and Fall Series have been expanded to 8 races each, to give our members as much racing opportunity as possible.  Both series will be a best-of-six (minimum five races to qualify) points championship. All races will be single-points events.

Derek Scott Jr
GCKI is proud to include among our members another nationally recognized champion.  Congratulations to Derek Scott Jr. for earning the highest U.S. points ranking for the Rotax Mini Max class.  Derek has been a member of GCKI for four years and has claimed the series title in nearly every class he’s raced in.  He also holds the track record for many of the classes he’s run in as well.  It will be just a little bit heartening for our local competitors to know that when they’ve been beaten by Derek – they’ve been beaten by the best in the country!

The attached file shows the calculated best lap times set in 2011.  As can be seen, with the combination of new tire compounds, ever-increasing driver skill, and kart tuning ability - many track records went by the wayside.  In considering the fast times, only GCKI club members in good standing on the date the time was set were eligible.  Times were considered for any official event - qualifying or racing held at the track in 2011.  Please look over the times.  This is a manual process, and it is possible errors were made.  Please advise any questions to John Bartos at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.   These times will be considered official on January 2nd and awards will be prepared and presented at the banquet accordingly.  Congratulations to all of this year's pace setters!

Awesome Shots logoGCKI is pleased to welcome Awesome Shots as our official photography partner.  Anyone who attended the Southwest Regional Cup races at GCKI saw well-known local motorsports photographer, Kenny Lau positioned strategically around the track taking great (awesome) action shots of the competition.  Kenny will be permitting GCKI to use some of the shots as promotional pieces for the club, and we will use his photos to highlight our year end banquet.  If anyone wants to view or purchase pictures from the SWRI Sunday race they can be previewed via the link below.  Kenny will be attending GCKI club races whenever possible to capture all of the racing action. http://www.photoreflect.com/store/thumbpage.aspx?e=8170933

Robby Mott Joins Gulf Coast Karters PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Robby Mott - RibtectIt is not typical that we issue a news release when we get a new member to the club.  (With GCKI approaching 300 members I’d be a pretty busy guy!) But then Robby Mott is not a typical new member.  In case you haven’t heard about Robby, (and chances are good that you probably have) he is a multiple U.S. national karting champion and also the founder of karting safety device manufacturer, Ribtect.  Given GCKI’s emphasis on safety, having Robby in our midst will serve as a daily reinforcement to that goal.  From their website: “Ribtect is committed to providing the karting industry with the most effective, functional safety equipment possible.”  If you’d like to learn more about Robby, here’s a great link to his story and his mission:  http://www.ribtect.com/About_Ribtect.html   When you see him out at the track practicing or competing in the upcoming Southwest Regional Cup races, stop over and say “Hello.”  He won’t be hard to spot – just look at his safety gear!

GCKI Track Improvement Progress Continues PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Many thanks to the volunteers who have come out each night to lend a hand in making significant improvements in the GCKI facility.  We've come a long way with new safety barriers installed, new fencing along the front of the property, relocation of the tires, partial repainting of all the curbing, installation of a new safer flag stand, and many other improvements.  However, there is still enough work to warrant the closure of the track on Saturday to finish the jobs.  We understand that not everyone could make it out to the track after work (for a listing of those who did pitch in - see Bryan Joplin's daily blog on our forums section.)  Now we need everyone who can contribute to come to the track on Saturday for one final push. You will see from the list below that we can use help of all ages and all abilities - all supplies will be provided, we just need volunteers to make it happen.
  • Finish painting the track curbing
  • Finish securing the landscapers cloth
  • Various painting task including the flag stand and parking lot barrier posts at the wellhead
  • Continue fence installation and flag poles
  • Pickup after Joe's tree trimming
  • General weed-eating and tree trimming
Check into the forums for Bryan's Friday update (usually posted late at night, to see what will remain for Saturday.)

GCKI is having a fund raiser to purchase a safety light system.

Why should GCKI invest in a Safety Lighting System?
  • Faster and more secure communication with drivers
  • Improves race track safety and security for officiating crew
  • Provides for safer practice, and race eveneliminates the need to round up  inexperienced corner workers
  • Sets GCKI as the premiere karting facility attracting more members in a safer environment
Please consider donating to help GCKI raise $15,764.40  for this improvement to improve safety for the racers and track workers.

If we all contribute a little, together we can make a big difference!
